Boy Crisis – Dressed to Digress (B-Unique) 22/06/2009

Boy Crisis are the latest in an ever growing line of synth driven, punk funk outfits to come out of New York. With ample amounts of blog buzz the five piece look set to follow in the well trodden path laid down by MGMT. Their latest offering Dressed to Digress may not be as psychedelic as their Brooklyn counterparts, but it certainly has the right mix of leftfield electro and pop sensibilities to warrant a cross over into the mainstream.

With a bouncy bass hook and a thumping disco beat, Dressed to Digress is surely a floor filler waiting to happen. By mixing the psychedelic lyrics of MGMT with the scratchy guitar punk funk of the Rapture, the five piece seem to have discovered musical alchemy. But after a few listens it starts to fall apart at the seams. The lyrics are to put politely, erm shit! ?You can do me like Bruce Springsteen, ask the swim team, pass the string beans?. To compound the bad lyrics, the musical arrangement does little to inspire. It?s a basic as they come and synth sounds are just thrown in sporadically without any thought. Boy Crisis seem like they?re on the right track, but sound like they knocked it all together in about five minutes.
