My Morning Jacket – Circuital (ATO Records)

July 3, 2011 by

My Morning Jacket return with their latest album, Circuital, which is the sixth release from the Kentucky band.

Often drawing comparisons with Fleet Floxes, as well as numerous other hippy-rock bands, the band have returned to their original sound, which definitely proves, in the case of Circuital, to be a good thing. Opening with ‘Victory Dance’, the scene is set for an almighty return. It is evident throughout that you are listening to a band that come from the southern part of America; there is often something in the music of bands such as My Morning Jacket and Kings Of Leon that transports you to the world of the deep south. It is something that is inherently built into bands from that area, that they are able to create music of which you know its ancestry, almost as certain as an accent.

Whilst their 2008 offering, Evil Urges, had a more experimental feel to it, this latest album feels like the band have finally got their sound right. Outta My System, Circuital and Wonderful (The Way I Feel) are the album highlights, with some great lyrics (and with some more tongue-in-cheek ones, too). My Morning Jacket are very nearly back to form on this album, it just isn’t quite the album to see the world on fire.
