Emerging Artists #30 – Howler

January 11, 2012 by

Rough Trade’s latest signings Howler have been touted by some as the saviours of rock ‘n roll. As always, such expectations should be met with caution but… who knows, these guys might just do it. They’ve got the whole ramshackle guitar pop thing sorted and judging by these answers, lead man Jordan has the nonchalance to maybe carry it all off…

How did you get together, where you from and why did you decide to make music together?

We are from Minneapolis. And funny enough, that’s where we all met! We decided to make music together because we were sad that we weren’t making music together.

What’s behind the band’s sound and how did you come to it?

We came to our sound by listening to Link Wray records whilst doing PCP.

What equipment are you using for recording, and is there any particular reason behind the choice?

We use tiny little amps and play tiny little guitars. And no. There is no real reason for this.

Where was the band’s first show and what was it like?

Our first show was in a coffee house in Minneapolis. We all got hyped on espresso and sucked.

What’s been your favourite gig you’ve played?

I loved playing Manchester at the Academy.

What bands/artists are you into at the moment?

I was never really a fan of music.

What can people expect when they come to your live shows?

People can expect us to all be naked and wrapped in one giant American flag. And lots of fireworks.

If you could get one band to reform who would it be?

I would say… THE SMITHS

Do you have any confirmed plans for an album yet and if so what can we expect?

Yes. Our album “America Give Up” will be released January 16th 2012 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

What’s up next for the band?

Lunch. We are very hungry, and it’s past noon!
