Emerging Artists #42 – PINS

How did you get together, where you from and why did you decide to make music together?

Faith – I was looking for a band, after a long time of looking I met Anna through a mutual friend. She went to see Beach House and after that she decided that she wanted to be in a band so I guess I came along at the right time for her. It then took a few months to find Lois, we tried to be a three piece – it didn’t work so we searched out a drummer in the form of Lara, that was at the end of August last year. We all live in the Northern Quarter in Manchester – neighbours! We just have fun making music and hanging out together, it just works.

What?s behind the band?s sound and how did you come to it?

Lois – Over time the songwriting process has become easier, at first we didn’t have a solid direction but we’re figuring that out now.

Anna – We all worked on the sound of our own instruments individually, playing around with pedals, working out what sounds good for each song.

What equipment are you using for recording, and is there any particular reason behind the choice?

Faith – For the LuvU4Lyf EP we recorded live at the Fuhrer Bunker in Salford with Martin from Sways records. The building is in the middle of an industrial estate, it’s kind of cold and grim but there was something special about recording there, there was a moment when i was in this big room by myself recording the vocals for ‘Say to me’ and i thought, fuck, yes, we’re really doing this!

Lois – The last song on the luvU4Lyf EP was recorded live to tape by Mark from Brown Brogues. It was fun to try using a reel to reel, we’d like to explore that further in the future.

Where was the band?s first show and what was it like?

Lara – The first time we played in front of people was in our practice room – we knew that we had our first ‘official’ show coming up so we wanted to try out playing in front of people.

Anna – Then we played at Islington Mill, that was our first ‘official’ show.

Faith – we played for 15 minutes, just 6 songs – one was a cover! We didn’t have very much material.

What?s been your favourite gig you?ve played?

Anna – Playing Nox Orae festival in Switzerland was one of my favourites because the audience were really into it, the people who work there treated us like queens, they took us on a boat ride!

Lois – The ritz when we supported Best Coast just because the venue is so great, i’ve seen so many of my favourite bands there… and its a fucking massive stage!

Lara – Birmingham with Willis Earl Beal

Faith – I loved our show at The Bunker with Savages. It was a 100 capacity, it was full and sweaty and really exciting. I was actually ill that night and it was still one of my favourites.

What can people expect when they come to your live shows?

Faith – lots of new songs, we write a lot.

Do you have any confirmed plans for an album yet and if so what can we

Faith – After the tour we are going to record again, i don’t know if thats for an album, RP, single.. I don’t know, I write songs and I want to record them straight away.

If you could get one band to reform who would it be?

Lara – Sleater-Kinney

What?s up next for the band?

We start our UK tour this week then we are going to France to play a couple of dates, and then we are playing on the 2:54 tour. We’re working on a joint project with another band which we might release ourselves soon, we’re not sure yet.
