Isa & The Filthy Tongues – Big Star (Circular Records) 29/06/2009

Edinburgh’s Isa & The Filthy Tongues are a great big bag of blah. Apparently creating quite a lot of buzz in their hometown, on the evidence of “Big Star” I am left wondering if something is very wrong over the border.

Isa, or Stacy Chavis from Oregon, has a voice somewhere between a third rate P J Harvey and Girls Aloud wearing leather jackets. In a two piece, attitude and personality count for everything. Unfortunately Stacey lacks either. Other half of the band Martin Metcalfe completes this limp duo, and it’s difficult to say who is more disappointing.
Metcalfe does a perfectly adequate impression of New Order, and his deep dark basslines are sweetly reminiscient of that era. Why oh why did he decide to marry them to such dross?

“We can be the big star, big star” drawls Stacy in what is supposed to be a scuzzy, underground rallying call. Not on the evidence at hand I’m afraid. Can Isa “make this Hollywood”? I think it more likely you will see them busking on the pavements around Holyrood for the foreseeable future.
