ArtVinyl today announced the winner of Best Art Vinyl 2009 with the Muse album – ‘The Resistance’ taking first place, Manic Street Preachers’ ‘Journal For Plague Lovers’ coming second and Fever Ray’s self titled album coming third.

.”With the Best Art Vinyl Award now in it’s fifth year” Andrew Heeps, Art Vinyl’s director comments, “this year we’ve really seen the award grow in stature and it is a great way to celebrate the unsung heroes behind the art and design of some of our favourite bands and artists.”

“Also, 2009 has been a particularly fantastic year for the award as we have seen lots of new talent mixing with some of the well known names of the sleeve design and the art world such as the Tom Hingston Studio, Farrow Design, Designers Republic, Rankin, Damian Hirst and Jenny Saville. Some of the sleeves have also required whole teams for the design such as for Florence and the Machine album who’s credits include Tabitha Denholm, Hugh Frost, Tom Beard and Orlando Weeks for their respective work as Art Director, Layout Designer, Photographer and Illustrator for just that one sleeve.

Muses join a list of other prestigious winners that include the Fleet Foxes’ self titled album, The Cribs’ Man’s Needs, Woman’s Needs, Whatever, Hard-Fi’s Stars of CCTV and Thom Yorke’s The Eraser in what has been a great year for the vinyl format.

Andrew Heeps goes on to say ‘we’re looking at a year when vinyl sales have increased again by over 30% and with CD sales losing their importance the canvas a vinyl record sleeve provides is really adding value for the owner as they are also purchasing a piece of collectable art. Also both the majors and indie labels are investing money in really stand-out sleeve art”

From Jan 5th the Best Art Vinyl 2010 the winners will be featured in exhibitions at The Art Vinyl Gallery, Basement level, Selfridges London, Rough Trade East, London, Snap Galleries in Birmingham, and Georges House Gallery in Folkestone. All of the designs will be displayed in the Play & Display Flip Frame.

The top 25 winning vinyl records will be on sale at the Art Gallery Selfridges.
